What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are comprised of several thin layers of porcelain that are adhered to the natural teeth and used to recreate a natural, healthy looking smile. Porcelain veneers can be used to improve the appearance of teeth with poor color, shape or contour and are a minimally invasive alternative to dental implants. This restorative service is considered a permanent treatment as the teeth in the treated area are permanently reshaped and enamel is removed so that the veneer can sit comfortably over the natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are individually sculpted to fit each patient and yield natural looking results, it is often difficult to tell the difference between natural teeth and porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are typically applied over the course of two visits. During the first visit, your teeth will be reshaped to make room for the veneer, and the second visit is when the veneers will be bonded to the teeth.

Who is a good candidate?

Porcelain veneers are a good option for patients interested in making small changes to the size, shape, color or position of their teeth. Porcelain veneers do not stain and make a good alternative for patients who may not be eligible for teeth whitening treatments.

What can I expect after my Porcelain Veneers have been applied?

We recommend patients avoid extremely hot or cold foods the first few days after porcelain veneers have been applied to allow the veneers to properly set. Some patients may experience sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures after the application of porcelain veneers. This sensitivity typically subsides within a week of their application. We recommend that patients with veneers avoid biting their fingernails, chewing ice, hard nuts, candy apples, popcorn kernels, and avoid using their teeth to open packages, as all these habits can cause damage to porcelain veneers.

How long will my Porcelain Veneers last?

Porcelain veneers can last anywhere from 7 to 20 years. Longevity of porcelain veneers can vary from patient to patient depending on oral care and lifestyle. Your veneers can be replaced if they chip or fall off. Changes in the gum tissue and living teeth around your veneers may require alteration or replacement of your veneers as well.
