What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are screws that are surgically implanted into the jawbone beneath the gum line to function as a permanent root for artificial teeth. This is an excellent restorative treatment option for patients who do not want to deal with the hassle of removable dentures, or who are not candidates for dentures. Dental implants can be used to replace one tooth, fill in spaces created by missing teeth, or replace a full upper and/or lower set of teeth. Dental implants provide a stable support for artificial teeth and eliminate any slipping or shifting that can be experienced with removable dentures. Dental implants can help restore a natural look and feel for patients with missing teeth.
Am I a candidate?
Patients interested in dental implants should be in general good health and have healthy gums and a sufficient amount of bone to support the implant. During your consultation, Dr. Latha will review your dental history and medical history and recommend the appropriate treatment option.
Dental implants are comprised of three parts:
- Implant: a screw that is permanently implanted into the jawbone and acts as the root for the replacement teeth
- Abutment: the permanent connector that can only be removed by your dentist and supports and holds the replacement teeth
- Crown: the prosthetic tooth usually made from porcelain for a natural look and feel
What is the process?
Installing dental implants is typically done in three phases and requires several office visits. First, a screw (the implant) is surgically implanted into the jawbone. The implant is allowed to heal and integrate into the living bone to create a strong support for your replacement teeth. The healing process can take several months depending on the patient. During your initial consultation, Dr. Latha will recommend the appropriate treatment plan for you. The customized replacement teeth are then fitted to the mouth and attached to the implant.
