What is a Porcelain Fixed Bridge?

A fixed bridge is a type of dental prosthetic that is an effective method of replacing a missing tooth or multiple teeth, by using existing teeth as anchors for a “bridge” of artificial teeth. Porcelain fixed bridges function by using porcelain crowns to create anchors out of the existing teeth to support a specially molded bridge of porcelain veneers. Fixed bridges can be made from a wide variety of materials, but porcelain fixed bridges are the most popular as porcelain is extremely durable and can withstand heavy pressure. Porcelain fixed bridges are also popular because porcelain can be molded to look like the original teeth and helps to maintain a natural look and feel. Porcelain fixed bridges are intended to be a permanent treatment option as the anchor teeth are permanently reshaped to fit the crowns.

How are Porcelain Fixed Bridges applied?

Installing a porcelain fixed bridge usually requires at least two visits. In the first visit, a local anesthetic will be applied to the two anchoring teeth and a portion of the enamel will be removed to create space for the crowns that will anchor the bridge. During that same visit, an impression will be made of the treated area so that the porcelain bridge can be molded to fit your mouth and established bite pattern. A temporary bridge will be applied during this first visit to protect the anchor teeth until your porcelain fixed bridge is ready to be applied.

During the second visit, your customized porcelain fixed bridge will be fitted to your mouth and then cemented into place. A follow-up visit may be scheduled for a week after the installation of your porcelain fixed bridge to see how your gums and surrounding tissue are responding to the device.

How long do Porcelain Fixed Bridges last?

With proper care and maintenance, a porcelain fixed bridge can last anywhere from five to 10 years. Caring for your porcelain bridge is fairly easy, maintenance requires routine brushing and flossing and regular dental check-ups.
